Wisdom of breadboading?

I was wondering if any of the experienced guys would comment about breadboarding the EV system prior to actually purchasing a vehicle chassis? I was thinking of connecting my system together on a bench top prior to buying a vehicle. As an engineer, I think it would be an interesting opportunity to measure a number of performance parameters. But then I thought that there are many spindle options for electric motors and that I might purchase the wrong kind. Knowing what little I do know about the automobile manufactures, the mechanics of connecting the motor to the transmission could be different per Ford,GM, Dodge etc. Thanks!
