BMS for Parallel Battery Bank
« on: February 18, 2021, 04:17:32 PM »
I'm in the midst of a EV boat conversion. Two Things:

1. Getting ready to order BMS. The batteries are Lifepo4, 2P30S, 96 volt, 280ah each, 50+ kwh total.
I'm thinking the BMS should be separated one per series group. i.e. one 30s BMS on each side. If one BMS trips out (low cell or something) I still have a 96v pack to limp home. Does this sound like a viable plan?

2. I'm thinking about equalizers rather than full BMS. Thoughts?

Thanks
Tom

Tom,

My opinion is that you don't want something that draws it's power from the cells themselves.  This is less of an issue on a car because in theory it gets regular use.  While I haven't owned an Orion BMS I can say that they have many rabid fans and they are local, based in Carol Stream if I recall.  https://www.orionbms.com/  I have seen their setup in action and it can bring you straight to a loose connection.  As I recall there might be one for sale in the for sale section of the forums by the one and only Bruce Jones.
