Title: Update needed - Many projects in club
Post by: rich.carroll on April 11, 2011, 05:16:56 PM
So many of our club members are working on EV's, some considering their first steps, some driving theirs, but looking for minor modifications.  Perhaps at club meetings we should offer a few minutes for members to update a portion of their projects.  Perhaps, discuss which motor they used on one meeting, discuss controller at the next.

I am aware of the following:

Nathan Stowe                      1988 Mazda RX-7                            Replacing/buiding controller
Steve Kaufman                      1985 Porsche 944                                Showing!
Steve Kaufman                     144V VW Beetle pickup                                Driving
Craig Dusing                      1997 S-10                          Replacing tired battery pack with lead or lithium
George Gladic                     Prius                                    Replacing lead in Plug-In Prius with lithium
Tom Gralewicz (Milwaukee)   Dodge Neon - 300V AC drive    Replacing controller with newer higher output
Geoffrey Pullinger   Toyota Tercel    driving as EV, restoring car
Ted Lowe   S-10    new battery set
Bob Baker   Honda Civic    running, finishing details
Steve Grushas   Zap Zebra   Adding one more battery, for 84V
Ken Simmermon   Doran 3 wheeler running, reengineering seat, replacing batteries
Scott Wilkinson Triumph Spitfire    Just starting, bodywork done
Dennis Doney   Honda Civic    just starting
Dio Vesselinov   Mitsubishi    starting, engine out
Frank Debreczenyi          Ford Focus    Planning, using multiple systems
Sergio Meza  Honda Civic    starting
IIT STudents  S-10 (old Argonne truck)            starting
Paul Marucci  Ford Escort    starting, has parts
John Emde  Ford Ranger    battery testing
John Jeide  Corbin Sparrow    converting to LiFePO4 batteries
John Jeide  VW Rabbit    rebuilding, close to done
Dave Habiger  Porsche Boxster    needs batteries installed
Jim Drasal  Fiberfab SSK    finishing wiring
Todd Dore  VW New Beetle    evaluating battery management systems
Rich Carroll  S-10    Some batteries need replacement. Change to lithium?
Miodrag Zubic  S-10   testing
Al Hostert  S-10   evaluating final details
Ed Harris  Toyota Matrix    selling
AST  Toyota Matrix    evaluating batteries (damaged?)

We might start with a one sentence announcement of what motor you are using, and your + or - experiences.

Rich -

Nice list.  For the Elec Bug, I'm evaluating BMS, but will stick with the same charger - a PFC-20.

Rich,
I am converting a 1989 Toyota Tercel and I am driving it (most of the conversion is done - the car has had heaps of restoration and it needs heaps more).  It's 120 volt with a Logisystems 550 amp controller (Which you sold me).  It has a Net Gain Impulse 9" motor with 10 100 amp/hr AGM batteries.  I'm using 10 Soniel 12 volt chargers, 1 per battery (This is like 1/2 of a BMS).  The car has a 5 speed manual gearbox and I've retained the clutch.  - http://www.evalbum.com/2445

Doran Three Wheeler, yes 3 is for me! may have to change 1 to 3 batteries, thinking of converting to NiMH. I will be contacting MIT for my seat problem. Country company's will be contacting me in a couple days on the insurance. Hope to be driving legally(LOL), by this weekend, so I can go by gas for my lawn mower. Just Kidding!

good list Rich

I have a 1974 super beetle.....144v..... now powered by a warp 9 inch thanks to Rich.

I also have the "club car"  1985 Porsche 944

I would like to convert both cars to lithium over the summer.... if time and money allows.
Steve

Steve -

When you convert your Super Bug to Lithium, we will have to race!  A test of the electric Beetles!

I see this on the list:

> Dave Habiger - Porsche Boxster

Can someone help me get in touch with Dave?  It doesn't look like he's ever used the bulletin board.  I've been thinking about a mid-80s 911 conversion, but a Boxster would sit better with my wife (air bags, etc).  I only see one Boxster in the EV Album (not Dave's) and would be interested in discussing the possible difficulties in converting a newer car which has more electronics and other auxiliary bits to keep functioning.

Thanks,

Skip Montanaro

We're working on the Boxster at Pioneer.  You are welcome to stop by the shop and look at it, see what we did, etc.  Emde swears he won't do another Boxster, but you can talk to him.

I still need to replace my controller on my 88 rx7.  (and add pre charge resistors)  I am on the fence to buy or build a controller.  I am thinking build, but I have not had time yet.

Hi everyone!

I bought my S10 (already converted) in May 2010. It had 120V battery system (20 US145's - tired), Curtis 1231C controller, Advanced DC 9" motor,
Only a few weeks after buying it a few batteries failed (expected) so I started the modifications:
- added battery box for 6 more batteries, bought and installed 26 x US2200 for 156V system
- upgraded Zivan charger for 240VAC in 156VDC and repaired/upgraded Zivan DC-DC converter for higher input voltage
- installed one of my controllers for testing
- changed original motor rubber mounts into custom made solid ones - motor was rotating too much under high torque (shifter would to 2" to the right)
- added a set of leafs in the rear suspension
