Oregon now taxing Alt. Fuel Vehicles based on Mileage
« on: August 03, 2015, 04:32:30 PM »
My brother from another mother, Paul Brian does a radio show on WLS 890 AM on Saturday mornings from 8 AM to 9 AM.  The show is called Drive Chicago, and features news and discussions of things automotive.

Paul and I started our recent series of discussions on air on July 4, discussing the new Oregon implementation of a straight mileage tax for Alternative Fuel Vehicles to replace the road use taxes paid through the sale of gasoline and diesel fuel.   http://www.stationcaster.com/player_skinned.php?s=1201&c=5781&f=4567403  Oregon distributed a OBD-II connector plug in claiming it was safe and would not collect any information except except mileage.  The first incantation did collect all possible GPS data, not just mileage.  After several strong complaints, Oregon changed to a mileage only capture.  This OBD-II port is the connection that the first hacks of cars used, using a Bluetooth Connection from nearby (within 30 feet of the vehicle)

Assuming you are interested, I invite you to listen to the podcast and further your knowledge.

This discussion continued into car hacking, see: http://www.fveaa.org/forums/index.php/topic,1262.0.html
