Three dead battery cells
« on: May 13, 2013, 01:13:14 AM »
Steve Kaufman, (the owner of the Porsche 944 called 5/12/2013) and has a battery issue with a different electric vehicle - a converted 1974 volkswagon that runs on 32 month old Interstate batteries (144 Volts) but only gets 4 - 5 miles range. Three of the cells were basically dead and he replaced number one with a compatible Duracell 29HM, 105 hours, 20amp cell.

That got the range up to 8 miles but he was concerned that replacing only a few cells like this would be bad for the whole pack.  And if he were to replace one he should replace them all.

Recommendations for the existing batteries?  Seems like with some attention he could revive the ones he has, but need input.

batteries 6 and 7 should also be replaced.  The new battery should come up closer to the others also after cycling it a few times.  You should be alright replacing just the bad ones if they are the same amp hours.  Ideally you would replace them all as the other old ones will be going south also as time goes on.  You are only as good as the worst battery in the pack.  Check out Trojan's website for advise on testing and maint.  A hydrometer test will give you more accurate information about the condition of the batteries and their individual cells.  I think that you are only allowed to have 50 points different between cells.

Dave,

That was very helpful.... Thank you

off to Sam's Club this weekend to buy two Duracell 29HM
. At $95 each..... I feel I'm getting out of this relatively inexpensively.

I still have a dream of converting to lithium-ion in the next few years... If the price falls a bit more. Thanks

Steve
