'92 S-10 EV

« on: December 28, 2007, 04:54:56 PM »

Jim Dawson was kind enough to give me 2  LED lamps for my S10 after he spoke on the subject (many months ago).

These are amber colored turn/parking lights for the front.  The http://www.heavy-dutylighting.com part no. is HD1157YSD:

Jim told me i'd probably have to change out the old (1992) thermal flasher for a new digital one because the LEDs use so much less current, the old ones think the bulbs are burned out and don't blink :-)

i happened upon this great article for modifying the blink-rate of a digital flasher in case i need to:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Automotive-electronic-flasher-rate-modification.

It's a simple modification, replacing a fixed resistor with an external variable one to determine/adjust the desired blink rate.  Perhaps the blink rate could be synched with the tempo of the currently playing song   Cheesy   Here's one of the pictures from the Instructable to whet your whistles:

More later...

Great post, Ted.  I found another source for the LED lights called www.superbrightleds.com.  I bought some home lighting bulbs from them and plan to put these on my EV when the time comes.  There are many advantages, as discussed.  Replacing the flasher relay is a small price to pay.
